I’ve read a lot of romance books, and very few made me stop mid-chapter just to breathe. Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover is one of them.

If you’re here trying to understand the characters in Ugly Love, who they are, what drives them, and why they’re so hard to forget, you’re in the right place.

In this blog, I’ll break down each character, their role in the story, how they affect each other, and why this book still has readers talking.

I’ve read and written about CoHo’s work closely, so trust me when I say this one hits different.

Overview of Ugly Love

The book cover of "Ugly Love" by Colleen Hoover features bold blue letters with bubbling water effects against a dark background, conveying a dramatic tone.

Ugly Love follows Tate Collins and Miles Archer, two people with a strong physical pull toward each other but very different ideas about what they want.

Miles has two rules: never ask about his past, and never expect a future.

What starts as a simple arrangement quickly becomes a lot more complicated when feelings start getting in the way.

The story shifts between two timelines, Tate’s present and Miles’ past, slowly revealing what broke him before she ever walked into his life.

Main Characters in Ugly Love

The two leads who carry the emotional weight of the entire story.

Tate Collins

Tate Collins is a nursing student who moves in with her older brother Corbin in San Francisco. She’s practical, focused, and not looking for anything complicated.

Her first-person narration pulls you right into her emotions. She grows a lot through the story, from someone who accepts less than she deserves to someone who finally chooses herself.

Miles Archer

Miles Archer is a pilot and Corbin’s neighbor. He’s quiet, brooding, and emotionally shut down. He sets two strict rules with Tate, no past, no future.

His chapters go back in time to reveal what broke him. The more you learn about him, the harder it is to stay frustrated. He’s damaged, but not unfeeling.

Supporting Characters

The people around Tate and Miles who quietly shape the story.

Corbin Collins

Corbin is Tate’s older brother and Miles’ close friend. He lets Tate stay with him while she’s in school. He’s protective of his sister and has no idea what’s happening between her and Miles.

His friendship with Miles adds an awkward layer to the whole situation. He’s not in the spotlight much, but his role matters.

Cap

Cap is the elderly elevator attendant in the apartment building. He’s around 80, warm, funny, and surprisingly wise. He befriends Tate early on and checks in on her throughout the story.

He lightens the mood in a book that gets pretty heavy. The fact that Tate and Miles name their daughter after him says it all.

Other Minor Characters

Rachel is Miles’ first love, and her story is told through his flashback chapters. Understanding her is key to understanding him.

Ian is Miles’ longtime friend who knows his past and keeps it real with him. Both characters seem minor at first, but they each play a part in why Miles became the person Tate eventually falls for.

Character Relationships and Chemistry

The relationship between Tate and Miles works because it’s built on tension, not just attraction. Miles sets two rules for them, don’t ask about his past, and don’t expect a future.

They do everything a couple normally does, but he never says he cares or that they could be more, and Tate holds onto it anyway until she can’t anymore.

The push and pull between them is what keeps you reading. And the supporting characters, Corbin, Cap, Ian, add pressure and perspective at exactly the right moments.

It’s not just a two-person story. Everyone around them reflects something back.

Goodreads & Amazon Ratings Insight

Readers have a lot of feelings about this one, and the numbers show it.

Goodreads: 4.07 out of 5 stars from over 1.7 million reviews.

Amazon: 4.6 out of 5 stars from over 158,000 ratings. Readers praised the book for its emotional pull and writing style.

Why These Characters Stand Out

Most romance books give you characters who are easy to root for. Ugly Love gives you characters who are hard to defend and even harder to give up on.

Miles and Tate are not perfect, but that’s what makes them realistic and relatable.

How many of us have been in a place where we took less than what we wanted because something felt better than nothing? That’s what this book captures so well.

Tate’s stubbornness, Miles’ silence, Cap’s warmth, Corbin’s protectiveness, each of them feels like someone you’ve actually met.

That’s rare. And it’s exactly why readers are still talking about these characters years after the book came out.

Conclusion

The characters in Ugly Love stay with you, not because they’re flawless, but because they feel so achingly human.

I personally found Miles’ story the most gut-wrenching part of the book. You spend so much time being frustrated with him, and then the pieces click into place and you just sit there. Quiet.

If you haven’t read it yet, I think you should. And if you have, I’d love to hear which character hit you the hardest.
